Oceanic Global’s inaugural ‘The Ocean x Climate Summit’ to draw urgent cross-sector attention for the ocean at COP27 1280 621 Ocean Decade

UN delegates, Indigenous leaders, government representatives, youth activists, scientists, corporate executives, artists, musicians, and more join forces to prioritize the ocean in the global climate agenda

Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt – On Friday, November 11th 2022, international non-profit Oceanic Global will host The Ocean x Climate Summit, a first-of-its-kind event designed to place the ocean center stage in the global climate agenda. Taking place in tandem with the world’s largest annual gathering on climate change, the Conference of Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the inaugural Summit will bring together cross-sectors leaders to draw urgent attention to the importance and potential of the ocean in mitigating the climate crisis.

The daylong event, which is programmed in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and supported by Salesforce, will feature a mixture of keynote presentations, panels, listening sessions, and performances from leading voices including: IOC-UNESCO Executive Secretary Vladimir Ryabinin, youth activist Xiye Bastida, UNFCCC Global Ambassador Raquel Moses, Dr. Sylvia Earle, International Monetary Fund economist Ralph Chami, Salesforce’s Director of Ocean Sustainability Whitney Johnson, actress Nathalie Kelley, OceanX’s Vincent Pieribone, “Waterman of India” Rajendra Singh, model Arizona Muse, Global Island Partnership’s Kate Brown to name a few. The Ocean x Climate will be hosted at The Park Regency Sharm El-Sheikh from 10am – 5pm EGY on the 11th, and is free for all who register.

The ocean covers over 70% of our planet. It regulates our climate, and absorbs the majority of the heat from global warming as well as humanity’s emissions of CO2. It’s also bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, with findings from the most recent UN World Ocean Assessment and IPCC reports demonstrating its increasingly dire state. Nonetheless, in the past 27 years of COP’s existence, the ocean has still never been a core focus at the global climate gathering. The ocean was only integrated across all areas of work under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement for the first time last year. And, as of June 2021, only 33 out of 193 countries within the Paris Agreement had included coastal and marine nature-based solutions in their national climate strategies. Embracing the slogan “Because we live on a blue planet. It’s time to act like it”, The Ocean x Climate Summit will underscore the ocean’s interconnectivity across all climate matters, and call upon decision makers and civil society to prioritize the ocean before it’s too late.

The ocean is our biggest ally in the climate crisis, but as its limited representation at COP demonstrates, the ocean is treated as a secondary narrative within the climate conversation. With human activity increasingly devastating its ecosystems and undermining the benefits we receive from the ocean, we need all stakeholders to prioritize the ocean – now. Oceanic Global’s objective with The Ocean x Climate Summit is to generate a groundswell of awareness for the ocean in the global climate agenda, and to pave a continuous path of collaborative action for the ocean and all it sustains.” – Lea d’Auriol, Founder & Executive Director, Oceanic Global

We’re proud to partner with Oceanic Global to elevate the ocean’s visibility in the global climate narrative and hope that the cross-sector convening at The Ocean x Climate Summit will serve as a launchpad to further support informed decision-making that protects the health of the ocean and of our blue planet.” – Dr Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary, IOC UNESCO

As a core component of the day’s program, The Ocean x Climate Summit will debut Oceanic Global’s biannual roundtable series titled “Our Shared Ocean Agenda”. The lunch-hour roundtable will unite representatives from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Climate Champions, the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Ocean & Climate Platform and more to align on both goals and opportunities to catalyze streamlined action for the ocean at future COP events and in the global climate agenda overall.

In addition to facilitating thought leadership and multistakeholder collaboration, The Ocean x Climate Summit will utilize artistic mediums as a universal appeal to protect ocean health. Featured installations and performances will include: music by Sounds of the Ocean and UN Youth Delegate AY Young, as well as on-site art installations such as: The Ocean Decade’s Digital Photo Exhibition “UN’s 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy,” and “Heart of Okeanos” a carbon sink sculpture by artist Petroc Sesti (co-commissioned by The Reefline, Faena Art and CarbonXinc).

To facilitate an inclusive groundswell of attention for the Ocean at COP, The Ocean x Climate Summit is first come first served and free for all registrants. A full recording of the day’s program will also be available following the event via Oceanic Global’s website.

About IOC-UNESCO:

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) promotes international cooperation in marine sciences to improve management of the ocean, coasts and marine resources. The IOC enables its 150 Member States to work together by coordinating programmes in capacity development, ocean observations and services, ocean science and tsunami warning. About the Ocean Decade:

Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.
