The Live Reef Food Fish Trade: Undervalued, Overfished and Opportunities for Change

International Coral Reef Initiative

Civil Society/NGOs

An ICRI report on the Live Reef Food Fish Trade (LRFFT), focusing on groupers and the wild capture fisheries, which account for almost all the species in trade and a significant proportion of the volume.

Recognizing the threats posed to reef fisheries and coral reefs in Indonesia, the country that hosts the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world, a study was commissioned to understand the current status of the international trade in live fish and identify opportunities for reducing harmful and destructive practices. The resulting study, just released, highlights a clear and pressing need for action, particularly by the primary traders, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, and provides an agenda for change.
