The School of Tourism and Maritime Technology of the Polytechnic of Leiria, ESTM - IPLeiria is located in Peniche, Portugal, facing the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, just one hour north Lisbon. ESTM is a privileged place to study, with fine people, Berlengas's Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO) as landscape, sandy beaches as well as many diving and surf spots in the vicinity.
The ESTM was created in 1999 and has since adopted the sea as a reference and support of its identity. The training offered at this school basically includes courses in the tourism area and in the maritime sciences area.
The School of Tourism and Maritime Technology is a public school of higher education that promotes knowledge, creates, transmits and disseminates culture, science and technology as well as guided research and experimental development. Furthermore, ESTM has a strong connection to the community that surrounds it and the quality patterns that lead it are also intended to provide a suitable answer to the needs of the region. The Polytechnic of Leiria is located in the Leiria district and includes 15,000 students and 885 teachers. ESTM located in Peniche is one of the schools of IPLeiria, it has 120 teachers and 1500 students.
Two of the Polytechnic of Leiria's research groups are also located at ESTM and Peniche, the CITUR (Tourism Research Group) and Mare-IPLeiria (Marine Resources Research Group at Peniche harbour - CETEMARES building).
These research groups together with ESTM periodically organize the IMMR (International Meeting on Marine Resources) and the International Tourism Congress.
