The SEA BEYOND Project by UNESCO and the Prada Group, combining ocean literacy and sustainable fashion, received the Oceans Award at the Sustainability Fashion Awards 2022.

The Awards ceremony, which presented 14 awards in total to diverse innovative projects working on sustainable fashion, is the result of a collaboration between the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and the United Nations Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI), with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the ICE Agency and the Municipality of Milan.

The award dedicated to the SEA BEYOND project was presented by scientist, author and environmentalist Kiara Nirghin. Patrizio Bertelli, Prada Group CEO, accepted the award, declaring the Group’s aim to “renew our commitment to sustainability at large.”

Since 2020, part of the proceeds from the Prada Re-Nylon collection has supported the SEA BEYOND Project, an educational programme on ocean conservation conducted by the Prada Group in partnership with UNESCO, through its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The Project aims to educate the younger generations on the complex issues around ocean pollution and circular economy. The vision and mission of the Ocean Decade are at its core: building knowledge and partnerships towards a healthy and resilient ocean.

Over the past 2 years, SEA BEYOND has trained more than 600 students from international secondary schools, and in 2021, with the launch of the second edition of the project, two more initiatives were plugged into the Project: “The Kindergarten of the Lagoon” in Venice – a programme of outdoor lessons for pre-school children – and a training activity on ocean literacy for the Prada Group’s 13,000+ employees.

About the Ocean Decade:

Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade
