New Ocean Decade Creative Communication Toolkits launched, making it easier than ever to help raise ocean awareness and inspire action 1081 1080 Ocean Decade

The Ocean Agency, together with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, announced today the official launch of the Ocean Decade Creative Communication Toolkits, a range of free online communication resources made available thanks to the support of UN Environment Programme, 11th Hour Racing and Adobe.

The first Toolkits that have been made available include one on the ocean as a whole and three on individual ecosystems: coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass. The Toolkits have been developed specifically to support the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 (the Ocean Decade) and have been endorsed as one of the official contributions to the Decade alongside the Ocean Image Bank (another free resource developed by The Ocean Agency for the Ocean Decade).

The Toolkits have been designed for use by the media, educators, creators, communicators, and anyone else looking to support the Ocean Decade by helping raise awareness about the ocean and its importance as well as inspiring greater support for ocean science and conservation action.

“Communicating about the ocean isn’t easy. There is a lot of information available but sifting through it all and working out what is important, accurate and compelling can take an awfully long time. It’s time that most people don’t have or can afford to waste. The result is less quality ocean communication which results in less support for action. Our goal was to make ocean communication not just easy, but to make it more inspiring by developing a range of Creative Communication Toolkits for the Ocean Decade,” said Richard Vevers, Founder of The Ocean Agency.

The information in the interactive toolkits has been prioritized and categorized so people can easily get a broad understanding of each subject covered, including the importance of the subject, the main issues being faced and the work that’s being to address them. There is even a creative challenge to inspire people to use the Toolkits to develop shareable artworks. Over 100 of the world’s top ocean photographers as well as Adobe Gen Create designers have generously supported the initiative – providing stunning and powerful imagery that can be freely used to raise ocean awareness.

Over the coming months more Ocean Decade Creative Communication Toolkits will be introduced, on a range of subjects such as marine litter to the sustainable blue economy, as well as supporting educational lesson plans and materials.

About the UNESCO’s IOC

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) promotes international cooperation in marine sciences to improve management of the ocean, coasts, and marine resources. The IOC enables its 150 Member States to work together by coordinating programmes in capacity development, ocean observations and services, ocean science and tsunami warning. The work of the IOC contributes to the mission of UNESCO to promote the advancement of science and its applications to develop knowledge and capacity, key to economic and social progress, the basis of peace and sustainable development. About the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)

Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyze new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade. For more information, visit oceandecade.org.
