Delivering science-based solutions for sustainable development: a new set of Decade Actions endorsed by the Ocean Decade 1000 540 Ocean Decade

A dozen new Decade Actions have been officially endorsed by the Ocean Decade to strengthen the impact of co-designed and transformative science for ocean health and resilience.

The newly endorsed Decade Actions contribute to the ten Ocean Decade Challenges and address diverse issues ranging from ecosystem health, ocean observations, tsunami early warning systems, ocean literacy, education and communication, support to decision-making and more.

From the United States to Germany, Japan and Papua New Guinea, these Actions are led primarily by governmental and research institutions based in ten countries around the world. Non-profit, multilateral and private entities are also involved, all working together through the Ocean Decade to deliver the science we need for the ocean we want.

A major contribution, the new Decade Collaborative Centre for the Indian Ocean Region (DCC-IOR), hosted by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), will make significant and sustained efforts to support the Ocean Decade in this significant part of the global ocean, by coordinating existing Decade Actions, catalysing new initiatives, leading targeted communications and outreach, and mobilizing resources.

The new Decade Actions complement a recent set of endorsements announced on 8 June 2022, World Oceans Day, as well as over fifty Actions unveiled in September 2022, resulting from the second Call for Decade Actions. To date, 45 global programmes, over 200 projects and more than 60 contributions have been endorsed and form part of the Ocean Decade ecosystem.

The fourth Call for Decade Actions was launched on 15 October 2022 and will be open until 31 January 2023, with a focus on coastal resilience and digital representation of the ocean. More details on the Challenges, themes and documentation can be found here.

About the Ocean Decade:

Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.

About IOC-UNESCO:

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) promotes international cooperation in marine sciences to improve management of the ocean, coasts and marine resources. The IOC enables its 150 Member States to work together by coordinating programmes in capacity development, ocean observations and services, ocean science and tsunami warning. The work of the IOC contributes to the mission of UNESCO to promote the advancement of science and its applications to develop knowledge and capacity, key to economic and social progress, the basis of peace and sustainable development.
