Ocean Decade Launch in Brazil

The United Nations declared the Ocean Science Decade for Sustainable Development between the years 2021 and 2030 to build an integrated approach and ensure that ocean science fully supports countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In Brazil, action plan for the Oceanic Science Decade is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI), Unesco Brazil and a number of partners, to foster the debate on the generation of knowledge and the use of coastal and marine space in the country. The science we need for the ocean we want!

  • Program of Events 

 April 20th: 

Launch of the Ocean Decade in Brazil - moderated by the journalist and representative of the League of Women by the Ocean Paulina Chamorro who debates with Brazilian guests topics like clean ocean, healthy and resilient ocean, predictable ocean, productive and sustainable ocean, transparent ocean and an inspiring and engaging ocean. 

Ocean Connection: coastal marine legislation and public policies - debate promoted by Fundação Grupo Boticário with the participation of specialists on the subject. The event will shed light on bills, laws and initiatives that have positive and negative impacts on the marine environment.

April 21st: 

Launch of the Brazilian Olympics of Oceanic Culture and web series Oceanic Culture - an event promoted by the Programa Maré de Ciência (Science Tide Program)/UNIFESP, UNESCO and MCTI to launch the Brazilian Olympics of Oceanic Culture for the participation of students and teachers from all over Brazil. The Ocean Culture web series will also be launched, which will bring 50 episodes with the content on Ocean Culture for the whole society.

April 22nd:

 Debate with the authors of the SBPC Science and Culture Journal on the Ocean Decade - On this 22nd of April, the Decade of Oceanic Science for Sustainable Development invites everyone to a chat about the Ocean with experts and authors of the special issue of the Science & Culture Magazine, a publication of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC).

The authors provide an overview of the situation of the ocean in Brazil, the main challenges and the necessary participation of all society in the Decade is being thought out so that we can achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 (Agenda 2030). The debate has the participation of scientists, journalists, civil society and representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), each with different approaches. The Decade of Ocean Science in Brazil brings together numerous partners from research and teaching institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, Civil Society and partner companies. Coordination is carried out by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
